Summary

Hiccup Haddock Horrendous III was a truly extraordinary Viking hero。 The warrior chieftain and awesome sword fighter was known as 'the Dragon Whisperer', on account of his power over these terrifying beasts。 But it wasn't always like that, and this is the story of his rise to fame, in his own words。

My kids watched all three movies as well as the TV series。 One day the litte one decided he wants to read the books。 So I bought him the first issue and we read it together。The first thing we recognized, it is not like the movies。 Besides some of the characters, especially the dragons are completely different。 However, the story was gripping and we enjoyed reading it after all。 Nevertheless, I caught myself comparing things with the movies from time to time。 Since I am not able to seperate both My kids watched all three movies as well as the TV series。 One day the litte one decided he wants to read the books。 So I bought him the first issue and we read it together。The first thing we recognized, it is not like the movies。 Besides some of the characters, especially the dragons are completely different。 However, the story was gripping and we enjoyed reading it after all。 Nevertheless, I caught myself comparing things with the movies from time to time。 Since I am not able to seperate both and consider the book its own thing, my rating is influenced by my movie experience。 I have to admit that I personally prefer the movies over the book, because the movie characters, dragons and barbarian world are more engaging to me。 I wonder how things would have been, when I would have read the book first。 Although my son thinks similar, he still likes the book and decided to continue the series。 。。。more

this audiobook is highly recommended on reddit, and the raves are justified。 david tennant gives a highly energetic performance in a wonderful scottish burrrrr。 there are elements that are different from the movie adaptation but loyalty and bravery in the face of grave danger are shared。

Amazing audio by David Tennant! A friend recommended this series (on audio specifically) for my 4 & 6 year old。 It was such a fun book, we found lots of errands to run, so we could keep listening in the car。 A week later we had finished the first 3 books in the series! I was very tempted to listen without my kids, but I resisted and waited for them ha!The story is your basic modern hero story for kids。 It didn’t have the deep themes of good & evil you get in older books & it’s a bit escapist (be Amazing audio by David Tennant! It was just super fun and i’m already dreading when we are done with them。 I’m very thankful she wrote 12 of them to enjoy though! Recommend you throw this on your to-read list! 。。。more

There are a lot of differences between the book and the movie。。。and unfortunately for the book, I like the movie's take better。 Still very entertaining though, and a nice quick read。 There are a lot of differences between the book and the movie。。。and unfortunately for the book, I like the movie's take better。 Still very entertaining though, and a nice quick read。 。。。more

i liked the humour but i did get rather bored by the end of itand yes, the three stars are mostly thanks to David Tennant's narration。 it was great。 otherwise, i'd probably give this like a two。 but David is amazing as always so i had to bump it up i liked the humour but i did get rather bored by the end of itand yes, the three stars are mostly thanks to David Tennant's narration。 it was great。 otherwise, i'd probably give this like a two。 but David is amazing as always so i had to bump it up 。。。more

How am I just finding this book?!? I’m so sad that my boys are now too old to appreciate it, as I am sure they would have back when they somewhat enjoyed reading for pleasure。 Looking forward to sharing this with my students!

I tried to go into this read with zero expectations, but that was hard since I love the movies so so much。 Warning ⚠️ the book is nothing like the movies! Not to say it’s bad! I still enjoyed it and I’m glad I read it。 However, I don’t know if I’d recommend it。 But do yourself a favor and go watch the movies if you haven’t already 🐉

I have to admit, I finally read this book (that I got with my extra Audible trial credit at least a year ago) simply to fill the dragon-shaped void in my heart after finishing His Majesty’s Dragon。 That being said。。。Standing on its own, this book manages to be clever, original, and charming enough to hold my interest。 But listening to David Tennant not just simply read, but perform this story with individual character voices, sound effects, and even singing? Far more entertaining。 Listen to this I have to admit, I finally read this book (that I got with my extra Audible trial credit at least a year ago) simply to fill the dragon-shaped void in my heart after finishing His Majesty’s Dragon。 That being said。。。Standing on its own, this book manages to be clever, original, and charming enough to hold my interest。 But listening to David Tennant not just simply read, but perform this story with individual character voices, sound effects, and even singing? It’s a short yet fun adventure that still manages to be intriguing。 The Supper is still singing。*Side note: In case you were wondering, this has little in common with the also-entertaining Dreamworks film of the same name* 。。。more

Very different than the movie, but very cute and quirky。 Extra enjoyed it because the audiobook is narrated by David Tennant

I really really enjoyed the book。 Very clever writing。 Good characters。 I found myself thinking halfway in that this might be a book or collection worth buying for my home bookshelves。 So why not 5 stars? I thought it ended too early。 The author did a wonderful job world and character building。 But the plot resolved far too quickly。 There just wasn’t enough meat to it。 But it’s a fun airy jaunt that I thoroughly enjoyed。So will I be buying a copy for my home bookshelves? Maybe, but maybe not。

We listened to this on audiobook, and I’m not sure how much my kids actually understood of what was going on; perhaps not quite old enough to be in the age range for it yet, and trying to understand the accent of the narrator。 Might try again in a few years, in hard copy。(Edit: my 7yo later told me it was a 1-star book, which is unusual for him; he said it had too much of the same thing, and that thing was kind of scary。 I think he must have meant the big dragons。 It wasn’t exciting or funny for We listened to this on audiobook, and I’m not sure how much my kids actually understood of what was going on; perhaps not quite old enough to be in the age range for it yet, and trying to understand the accent of the narrator。 Might try again in a few years, in hard copy。(Edit: my 7yo later told me it was a 1-star book, which is unusual for him; he said it had too much of the same thing, and that thing was kind of scary。 I think he must have meant the big dragons。 It wasn’t exciting or funny for him。 Most of the humor went over his head, so he just heard the scary and mean bits。) 。。。more

I love the movie。 And this book was way different。 I admire who visioned the script from this story。 Only the concept stayed the same。There are several details in the book that I would not put in a children’s book。Now I am confused, and I cannot rate separately from the film。If I hadn’t seen the movie, I might have liked it better。

Having seen the movie first, the movie does not follow the book at all other than the names of the characters and some of the relational dynamics。 This was a read aloud to the kids and it was entertaining for them still and they're ready to start the second in the series。 Having seen the movie first, the movie does not follow the book at all other than the names of the characters and some of the relational dynamics。 This was a read aloud to the kids and it was entertaining for them still and they're ready to start the second in the series。 。。。more
